Description
Originating from Kashan, Mohtashem is one of the highly esteemed weavers from the region (located in central Iran between Isfahan and Tehran). Some of the finest rugs woven of wool and silk in the latter half of the 19th century were created by master weaver Mohstashem. The rug collector folklore pinpoints a Mohtashem as key to the weaving revival in the Kashan. According to the story, Mohtashem's wife from Sultananbad was trained in the ancient craft of rug knotting. She knotted rugs with merino from Manchester and they were sold in bazaars, creating a resurgence in the art. Kashan rugs are known for having some of the most intricate scrollwork and curvilinear patterns among all hand-woven rugs.

With great attention to detail, the ancient skill that resurged the rug weaving in Kashan combines unique artisanship and elegance that could be appreciated by collectors and novices alike. Recognizing exceptional beauty does not require special training. The designer of this rug sought to capture a moment in history resembling a snapshot of a Persian monarch. Additional scenes from the same era have been depicted throughout the detailed border. This antique piece is one of history’s finest pictorial rugs from the legendary Mohtashem workshop.
