Description
Originating from Kashan, Mohtashem is one of the highly esteemed weavers from the region (located in central Iran between Isfahan and Tehran). Some of the finest rugs woven of wool and silk in the latter half of the 19th century were created by master weaver Mohtashem. The rug collector folklore pinpoints a Mohtashem as key to the weaving revival in the Kashan. According to the story, Mohtashem's wife from Sultanabad was trained in the ancient craft of rug knotting. She knotted rugs with merino from Manchester and they were sold in bazaars, creating a resurgence in the art.

With great attention to detail, the ancient skill that resurged the rug weaving in Kashan combines unique artisanship and elegance that could be appreciated by collectors and novices alike. Recognizing exceptional beauty does not require special training. The medallion motif and painstaking detail of the color border are exemplary of the Mohtashem style.
