Description
Persian Sultanabad rugs are so named after their town of origin in the northwest region from the same Arak district as Farahan Sarouks. These oriental rugs that supported the area cottage industry were produced by families of weavers using a moderate weave and a thicker pile that resembles nomadic rugs. The Sultanabad rugs of the 19th and 20th centuries are highly sought after as the sophisticated designs appeal to collectors and designers alike.

The Sultanabad rugs often feature sprawling representations of the Persian motifs Herati, Mina Khani, and Harshang with some very rare displays of the Musfavi or the Garden of Paradise motif. Typically set against a deep backdrop, the motifs employ earth tones and muted hues to bring out the intricate detail. This Sultanabad rug features a central medallion, which is less common than other Persian rugs. The earth-toned terracotta backdrop highlights the scrolling details.
