Description
Handwoven in or near the ancient city of Khotan (or Hotan) in Chinese Turkistan, the Khotan rug was once referred to as the Sarmakand. The culmination of Turkish, Indian, Chinese and Persian histories woven into the design demonstrate the vastness of the Khotan kingdom and the representation of specific cultural aspects into an overall design.

Decorations typically feature rosettes in lattice designs but the influences from Indian and Persian cultures are also woven into the patterns. Inclusion of colors like rust or scarlet reflect a Persian influence, diamonds or flowers are representative of Indian culture, a multicolored striped border is reminiscent of Chinese influence, and a central medallion is inspired by Tibetan culture. Although some of the vibrancy of these rugs have lessened, the muted colors still vividly display the refined multicultural designs. This contemporary Khotan is no exception.
