Tapestry. After the passing of Louis XIV, the official, formal themes found in tapestries vanished to make way for more creative themes. Tapestry weaving became more romantic with beautiful and realistic landscapes designed by artists who painted the designs. Skillful weavers then used these as the patterns for their weaving. Through the use of thousands of colors and very fine weaving, tapestries became so painting-like in appearance they some hardly seemed as if they had been woven. The border designs were chosen very carefully, thus always complementing the background subject. As seen in this great example, the garland-like border softly runs into the landscape at the bottom center of the peaceful scenery.
