Description
Named For the city and the Province Kermanshah of western Iran, it located is in the Kurdistan making this a crown jewel of Kurdish rug weaving. The city is a center of trade for many towns and villages in the province and the surrounding Kermanshah area is famous for the finest wool in Iran benefiting from the Zagros Mountain climate.

The rugs most prevalent in these markets are tribal in style and woven by the Kolyai tribe. While often referred to as Kurdish rugs or Kolyai rugs, within the United States, the Kermanshah rug is often used interchangeably with Kerman rugs. Weavers of Kermanshah rugs employ a symmetric Turkish knot with nomadic medallion and tribal motifs throughout. This antique 19th century piece with an ivory field seems almost museum quality. The diamond shape medallion enclosing an eight point medallion adds to the brilliance of this piece.
