Description
Originating in or near Kerman (or Kirman) in southern Iran this new contemporary piece belongs to a long line of rug heritage dating back to the 16th century. The Persian Kermian was a highly sought after commodity with large demand. The cultural complexity of the areas demanding this rug resulted in a variety of styles and designs. Kerman rugs boast sophisticated, well-organized designs including vases, shrubs and gardens with a medallion typically as the central focus. The asymmetrical knotting of wool with silk or cotton in between, produced a double-warped rug with an almost three-dimensional appearance.

The coloring of a Kerman rug was among the most vibrant and varied of Persian rugs, however modern versions offer a more muted palette for the discerning collector. The late 19th and 20th centuries saw a resurgence of Kerman rugs presenting a diverse mixture of designs and depictions, yet still displaying the varied asymmetrical knotting. This antique Kerman collectible rug is no exception, handknotted from wool and utilizing a muted neutral palette to find its way into a variety of floorscapes.
