Description
Antique Persian Sarouk.
Woven in the village of Sarouk in central Iran, this antique work of art is famous as the “American Sarouk.” This stunning and unique design of disconnected floral sprays branching out from a floral medallion became very popular in the United States after World War I, and as a result, became known as American Sarouks. The intense salmon pink used in this rug, known as dughi pink, is typical of the American Sarouks; this color is achieved by adding yogurt to the dye mixture. A mixture of yogurt and water is called Dugh in Farsi. This color was one of the reasons American Sarouks became so popular in the United States. As seen here, the border and the floral motifs are commonly woven in navyto complement the famous salmon pink.
